he General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union law implemented on May 25, 2018. It mandates organizations to protect personal data and uphold the privacy rights of individuals within EU territory. The GDPR establishes seven principles of data protection and eight privacy rights, empowering national data protection authorities to enforce compliance with potential sanctions and fines.

Any organization that processes the personal data of individuals in the EU must comply with the GDPR. This includes actions like collection, storage, transmission, and analysis of data. The regulation applies regardless of whether the organization is based in the EU, and it covers both for-profit and non-profit entities.

Non-compliance with the GDPR can result in significant sanctions and fines. The maximum penalty is €20 million or 4% of the organization's global revenue, whichever is higher. Data protection authorities may also impose other sanctions, such as bans on data processing or public reprimands.

To comply with the GDPR, organizations should implement technical and operational safeguards to protect the personal data they handle. This includes conducting a GDPR assessment to understand the nature and security of the data, adhering to GDPR privacy principles (like obtaining consent and ensuring data portability), appointing a Data Protection Officer, and updating privacy notices as required.
